Plan Your Trip

Everything you need to arrive prepared: how to get here, what to pack, when to come, and how to spend 48 hours in the heritage city.

Getting here & getting around

Driving in

I-68 meets I-70 and US-220 here. Roughly 2h20 from Washington D.C. (137 mi via I-270/I-70), 2h from Pittsburgh (130 mi via I-79/I-68), 2h20 from Baltimore (140 mi via I-70) and 1h15 from Morgantown, WV.

By train

Amtrak's Capitol Limited stops at the Cumberland station on Queen City Drive daily in each direction between Washington D.C. and Chicago. Bikes travel with you in the baggage car — reserve a bike space when you book.

Parking

Free and metered street parking on Baltimore Street and around the pedestrian mall; the Canal Place lot is the easiest long-stay option and puts you at Mile 0 of the GAP. Trailhead lots at Frostburg Depot and Rocky Gap State Park fill first on summer weekends — arrive before 10am.

Bikes & shuttles

Downtown outfitters rent hybrids and e-bikes and run one-way shuttles up the GAP so you can coast back to town. The C&O towpath is crushed stone — 35mm tyres or wider, and a spare tube per rider.

What to pack, by season

Spring

Mud on the towpath and 20-degree swings in a day. Waterproof shell, layers, and shoes you don't mind soaking.

Summer

Humid valley heat with afternoon thunderstorms. Two litres of water per rider, sun sleeves, and a swim towel for Lake Habeeb.

Fall

The best riding weather and the busiest weekends. Book lodging early, pack a warm layer for the 6pm chill in the gorge.

Winter

Quiet streets, steam-train season, and ice on shaded trail sections. Traction shoes, gloves, and a plan that leans on museums and taprooms.

Good to know

Opening rhythms

Many downtown shops close Sundays and Mondays; kitchens wind down around 9pm midweek. Check the live hours on each listing before you set out.

Accessibility

The pedestrian mall and Canal Place are flat and paved, and the first towpath miles are firm, level surface. Some historic buildings have stepped entrances — call ahead.

Bringing a dog

Dogs are welcome on the towpath and GAP on leash, and on several downtown patios. Check lodging pet policies — a handful of inns are adults-and-humans-only.
